Chapter Six

Benny sighed and dumped more paint into the tray. According to Jon, he’d call that night. He never should’ve believed the man. Four days had passed since their date. He’d put in the front door of the house, freshened up the trim on the porch as well as finished painting the living room. Other than a few touch-ups here and there, he’d didn’t have anything else to do. When Arlen stopped by, he’d suggested Benny paint the shed too, and offered another grand for the job.

Of course he’d paint the shed. He’d do just about whatever Arlen wanted for a few extra dollars. He slopped the roller through the paint and focused on his job.

He shouldn’t have been shocked about Jon not calling. Jon probably wasn’t interested. He’d wigged out and Jon bugged out. Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about Jon. The kisses had been seared into his memory. He shivered and rolled the paint onto the shed. He wanted a few more of those kisses.

Benny glanced over at the sidewalk. Part of him wished Jon would appear. He hadn’t seen Jon on the running path for the last four days, but didn’t notice his car in his driveway. Maybe he was home and maybe not. Part of Benny hoped Jon wouldn’t come by. He wasn’t sure what he’d say.

He must’ve scared Jon off. Jon most likely wanted a more confident guy. Although he could be confident with screws, nails and a hammer, relationships screwed him up. Maybe it had been the revelation about being homeless that had bothered Jon. Some men didn’t want to date a guy who’d been through rough times. He’d found that out the hard way. Corey had insulted him, and while Blake claimed Benny’s past wasn’t an issue, he refused to look at the few photographs from when Benny lived on the streets.

He shook his head and focused on painting. His hands ached from the repetitive motion, but the cadence of the roller lulled him. Up, down, repeat until completely covered. Not much thinking involved.

“Hey you.”

Benny jerked and gripped the handle tight. He hadn’t expected to hear that voice. Jon. He hadn’t even noticed the footsteps behind him. He massaged his forehead, then turned around. “Jon. Hi.”

“Have I ever told you how cute you are with paint smeared all over your face?” Jon brushed the back of his fingers over Benny’s cheek. “It works for you.”

“Thanks.” He couldn’t ignore the embarrassment. “Arlen suggested I make the shed look new.”

“He’s a smart guy. The place looks great. Like a brand-new house.” Jon folded his arms and widened his stance. “What’s the status?”

“On?” He met Jon’s gaze. He’d forgotten the warmth he found in those eyes. “I’m confused.”

“Sorry, the house.” Jon laughed. “I forget sometimes that other people don’t know what I’m talking about. I get on my own wavelength and expect everyone else to follow.”

“It happens. I bet you spend a lot of time in your own world.” Benny turned back to the shed and finished his section.
